Title: Winifred Godfrey. The highlight of my day today was walking into an art gallery, out of town no less, and instantly hearing… “Pink Glasses!” followed by “he’s with the media!” Me the media? Blush… I just take photos. One would think I’d be use to the pink glasses giving me away buy now - but it honestly takes my by surprise every time. Much to my surprise I was invited up to a closed off upper gallery space and given a sneak peek of the upcoming Mayan Procession show. Much to my surprise the art, who I’ve admired for some time, was not only in the building but helping hang the show. I took this chance to snap a few photos of her and sit down and talk “art shop” with her. We talked about ArtPrize, Meijer Gardens, the GRAM, and various other art collectors and galleries that she has been in and out of in her career.
I soaked up her words like a sponge and also discovered that she not only a painter, but an accomplished photographer and she let me back to partitioned off space and let me go through pieces of her photographer. Such beauty and colorful compositions of the Mayan culture. I can honestly say she is the the real deal when it comes to Mayan street photography - she captured their culture in every still frame.Trust me on this… you need to see this show! Big Rapids is only an hour away from Grand Rapids - make the trip to see Mayan Procession! In Winifred’s words, “Mayan Procession is a series of 14 life-size paintings representing highland indigenous people from Guatemala where each village has a unique weaving style and traditional dress. The ‘procession’ is the way I choose to honor these beautiful people who are a living connection to our pre-Columbian past.” Her artwork is included in many private, corporate and museum collections and has been exhibited throughout North America.MORE INFORMATION:Winifred Godfrey - Mayan Procession ExhibitJanuary 31 - February 24, 2012Artworks Gallery, Big Rapids, Michiganwww.artworksinbigrapids.com
