Title: Lensman Hanson.Fujifilm X100 portrait of photographer John Hanson. Location: Rowster - New American Coffee, Grand Rapids, Michigan.I enjoyed taking the time today to unwind and talk photography with John Hanson. Truth be told, I’ve been a major fan of his for some time now. He has not only a great eye for the craft but has full control on the age old use of film photography. His resent solo show at the GASPARD GALLERY was nothing less than amazing… and yes, I took home one of his pieces. Take the time to go through his flickr - he sees the world in a unique way and you will totally thank me!John’s flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/johnhanson/

Title: Sean’s Portrait. As a photographer one rarely finds inspiration in the form of another photographer so close to home… and then there is Sean Lancaster.Sean is not only a fellow TEDster (people who attend TED and TEDx events), but he’s a professor at Grand Valley State University, has a love for all that is coffee, and yes the man likes to take photos… well not only takes photos, but takes really good photos.I first caught wind of Sean’s photography after stumbling onto his flickr stream. For those of you not familiar with flickr (www.flickr.com) it’s an online photo community that I not only troll daily, but actively post photos up to and it’s super addictive. I remember being instantly attracted to how he photographed people. He understood street photography and I loved how he carried that raw street feeling to photographing the people around him. The second thing I noticed was that he was a Sony NEX user and was then intrigued by the quality of shots that he was getting and needed to see more. Yes, I’m a nerd like that… always looking at the gear one uses. Sean not only rocks out the images on his NEX, but he is pushing the limits of that camera and for me I can’t stop watching him exceed those boundaries. So yes, I stalked his photo stream like a crazy person! I jumped for joy to see that Sean attended a gallery talk and some photo walks I lead around the city. It was from those events that I knew I would need some one on one coffee time with him… I needed to take the time to find out his story. We did what all photographers do… we grabbed our cameras and headed to a local coffee shop. Interestingly enough photography was a minor part of our conversation as we talked about everything from the arts to living in Grand Rapids. We played a little GR-Bingo and found out that we shared a lot of friends, and then tried to figure out why we did not meet sooner. Photography was discussed and I’m pretty sure I will be one blamed when he upgrades to a full frame sensor DSLR, it bound to happen - I sense these things! At the end of the day I was glad to have finally had the chance to meet him and I have a feeling that there will be many more cups of coffee in our future. I also look forward to having Sean in my circle of friends… he is totally the real deal!Sean’s flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/jayhawkPhoto above taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III outfitted with their new EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens.

Title: EAT SLEEP READ.I know this is going to get some people up in arms… but sometimes a portrait doesn’t have to have your subjects face as the main focal point. How dare I say that, right?Take the photo above of my barista friend Cam, while I have plenty of shots of him with his face being the main focal point in this shot I made his new font based tattoo the focal point. Yes, you can still see his face clearly enough to classify it as a portrait - but the sharpness in the photo comes from the tattoo. I also played with framing to give motion to the photo and decided on a semi-tight crop.So there you have it… I think this one turned out awesome. Enjoy.
