Title: The Diva in the Crowd.
You can take the street photographer off the streets… but you can’t take the street sense off his eye.
One of my favorite shots taken while on assignment at the Westminster Dog Show in New York City. From the moment I saw her walk into the room I knew she would make a great candid portrait.
Image shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and a EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens.
Title: Strutting One’s Stuff.
Panning is an age-old technique that I am sure many of you already know/use. When shooting these moving subjects it is important to “stay with” the subject while you frame the shot before and after you shoot.
Truth be told… I admit that when I first started to learn the art of panning with my camera I became super frustrated and even contemplated throwing my camera a few times. It happens and this is one camera skill that really follows the age old rule of “practice makes perfect!”
So today in celebration of the panning shot above from the Westminster Dog Show in NYC I’m posting a tutorial on all things panning by Digital Photography School. ENJOY and WORK THROUGH THE FRUSTRATION, you will get it!

Title: SPACE WOMb.
The words Fontography and Fontographer are already taken… what would you call a photographer who is obsessed with taking pictures of fonts/type?
Title: Multiple Temptations.
A fun high ISO / in-camera multiple exposure shot of my friend JD Urban. Photo was taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and is made up from 3 exposures finished with a simple black and white film conversion.
SETTINGS:
Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Lens: Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake, Exposure: 1/25, Aperture: f/2.8, ISO: 10000 and an Exposure Bias of 0 EV.
Title: Art Criticism.
I walked upon this gem of a poster while making my way around 5 POINTZ, NYC… of course I had to stop and take a photograph. Snarky content, window reflections, and some true font love.
Title: The King of Paint.
NYC Street Art. Photo taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and their EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens.
Title: Coffee Break.
Today’s blog post features an Urban Still Life I took while in Williamsburg, NYC. The photo above features random items that I stumbled upon while walking around the city and features one of my favorite elements - coffee and graffiti!
QUESTION: So what is Still Life Photography?
ANSWER: Still Life Photography is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects.
Still life photography is a precise art form and is pretty much the gateway drug into product photography. As a photographer you are expected to be able to arrange the shot with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with compositional skills. It has always been said that the still life photographer “makes pictures” rather than “takes” them and a keen sense of textures, surfaces, and color theory is also a must.
So there you have it… and now you know! As always, practice makes perfect - so get out and snap some photos!
