Title: Serving Some Realness.
Whenever we are out on a shoot that involves lighting/strobes there is always time to get a few new profile pictures. So here is a new profile pic/lighting test from today’s Gazelle Girls Half Marathon Shoot.
Yes… those are really Pink Glasses, yes they are prescription, and don’t hate over my Big Dipper t-shirt. Momma is looking fierce.
Photo courtesy of my amazing and talented assistant Ian Anderson.

Dialing in lights… outtake from today’s photo shoot. Terry Johnston Photography, shot by my killer assistant Ian Anderson.
Photo taken with a Canon EOS 60D and an EF 24mm f/1.4L II lens. Lighting provided by 2 Alien Bees (AB400 & AB800) and processed in Adobe Lightroom 4.
Title: Hunting Pink.
Outtake from a lighting / test shoot… of course when photographers test lights it always means a new profile picture needs to happen!
Photo shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, EF 24-70mm f/2.8L, and some AlienBee (AB800 & AB400) strobes. Photo credit and shout out to my awesome assistant Ian Anderson.
Title: Orbicularity.
Lighting test with my assistant Ian Anderson. We ended up shooting this shot at the Fish Ladder Park boat launch in Grand Rapids, Michigan around 9pm - just after sunset.
Gear: Canon EOS 5D Mark III outfitted with a EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM, AB800 with 22” silver beauty dish/honeycomb grid, AB800 with 7” honeycomb grid, and a Speedlite behind Ian to make the starburst.
Camera Settings: Manual settings - 1/6 sec Exposure, f/3.2 Aperture, 24mm, ISO 100, and a whole lot of awesome.
Just posted this to show you what professional photographers do when we get bored… we shoot each other!
Title: Electric Intensity.
Testing out the new Beauty Dish on an AB800. Photo was taken by my amazing lighting assistant Ian Anderson with a Canon 5D Mark III outfitted with a 24mm f/1.4L II USM lens.
I must say that I look pretty fierce and what is up with my serious face? Pink Manther RAWR!
Title: Test Subjects.
So I have officially joined forces with strobes… I will still keep my constants on hand for various video/photo production shoots but for everything else - it’s strobe time!
Lucky for me I have one of the best assistants in town and who happens to be a whiz when it comes to lighting. He took a very important role in what I bought, as well as helped me shop for what we needed. Oh and if you don’t know Ian, the photo above is of him from last night lighting test run at The Richard App Gallery.
Of course, I’m sure you are like - who cares… we want to know what you purchased! So spill it, right?
After much research we ended up going with a grouping of Alien Bee AB-800’s and a single AB-400. New light stands were also purchased, along with Wireless Triggers, Honeycomb Grids, Extreme PLM Umbrellas, and a Octabox that is all powered by a Vagabond Mini portable power pack.
… and yes, I totally take back my hatred for strobes - pretty sure I owe Ian dinner for admitting that!
Title: The Man with The Plan.
I try to not to post photos of me on my blog… I just don’t want to come across as “that guy”, but this photo needs to be shared. My assistant Ian and I were out and about last night testing out new lighting and this shot he took of me is a winner. From the senior portrait pose on the white chair to the smart ass look on my face. This photo is the real deal representation of all things Terry Johnston.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do, new profile picture FTW!
